I cut the zip ties and rolled the deputy onto his back. His name tag read “Harlan Pierce.” I slapped his cheek lightly.

“Deputy. Stay with me.”

His eyes fluttered, unfocused, pupils struggling against hypothermia.

“They… left her,” he rasped.

“Who?” I demanded.

He swallowed hard.
