Three years ago, after leaving my job to stay home with our newborn daughter, I started baking cakes for extra cash.
At first, I simply wanted to contribute financially while having something that belonged to me. My husband, Zion, assumed it was a phase. But my friends and family were supportive, and through word of mouth, my little hobby slowly became a real business.
My mother-in-law, Giselle, was never impressed.
“Still playing with frosting, honey?” she would say. “It’s a silly little hobby, but hardly a real job.”
I usually laughed it off. Arguing with Giselle was never worth the headache.
But as business picked up, she began requesting cakes for her friends. Birthdays, retirement parties, book clubs—you name it.
And she expected every one of them for free.
