Diana looked at me over the rim of her glasses. “Mrs. Vale — “

“Miss Hargrove,” I said. It was the first time I had used that name in five years. It felt like setting something down I had carried too long. “Please.”

She nodded once. “Miss Hargrove. Do you understand what your husband’s legal team is actually doing?”

“They’re counting on me to be desperate.”

“Yes.” She turned a page. “The property transfer to Celeste Monroe has a problem. Your name was on the title. There was no court order, no agreed separation, and no legal dissolution of marriage at the time of transfer. In the state where the property sits, that transfer is contestable. It may in fact be voidable.”

I folded my hands on the desk.

“Voidable,” I repeated.

“The transfer may be treated as fraudulent disposition of marital assets.” She allowed that to rest in the air. “Which opens Adrian Vale to exposure well beyond the house.”

Samuel made his questioning sound from the bassinet. I did not look away from Diana.
