Jason’s voice cut through the terminal noise before I could even tell him I had landed. Three sleepless nights pressed down on my shoulders like wet wool, and forty years of marriage had just ended with Henry lowered into the earth of the village where he was born.

« Jason, I haven’t slept in three days. »

He exhaled hard into the receiver. In the background, my grandson’s laugh rang out, then a shout.

« Tell Melissa I claimed Grandpa’s truck! »

My throat closed. I gripped the phone tighter.

« Dad is gone, Mom. Stop making everyone responsible for your grief. »

The line went dead before I could answer.
