Everything inside me went still.

Margaret remained by the sink in her elegant morning robe, sunlight catching the wedding ring on her finger. Just two days earlier she had cried during the ceremony, held my arm during the first dance, and thanked me for giving our son the perfect beginning to married life.

The wedding had looked flawless. Ethan had never seemed happier. Madison stood beside him in layers of Vera Wang tulle, one hand resting gently over the curve of her stomach. My future grandchild. Or so I believed.

“Charles?” Margaret turned from the sink. “Who was calling? You don’t look well.”
