Dogs that remembered.

“Hang on,” Blake said quietly, resting a hand on the dog’s neck. “We’re not done here.”

He stepped back out of the car.

“Hey,” he called.

The man froze mid-step.

Blake walked toward him, calm but firm. “You said he was retired police.”

“Yeah,” the man muttered. “That’s what I was told.”

“By who?”

A pause.

“Don’t remember.”
