When Javier, my husband of eleven years, told me he wanted a divorce, he spoke like someone reading from a script. No anger. No tears. When I confronted them, neither denied it. My mother spoke about “love without boundaries,” as if morals were optional. Javier said I “no longer fulfilled him.” As if I were a phase he’d outgrown.
