For months, she’d been quietly tucking away small amounts from her sewing jobs, birthday cards from family, and whatever change wandered into her purse.

« You really aren’t going to tell him? » I asked.

« Absolutely not. » She looked up, eyes bright. « I want to see his face when I surprise him. »

« You know he’s going to cry. »

« Good. Serves him right for surviving! »

I laughed so hard I snorted, which made Grandma Margaret laugh, which made her have to start counting the quarters again!

« You really aren’t going to tell him? »
