Part of why viewers feel so connected to Al is because he has always been open about his vulnerabilities. Over the years, he has allowed the public into some of the most difficult chapters of his life: weight struggles, diagnoses, surgeries, and the emotional toll that comes with them.

Instead of choosing privacy, he chose advocacy.
“If I can help one person get checked early, then sharing my story is worth it,” he once said.
It’s rare to see a public figure embrace transparency so fully. But Al believes strongly that talking about health — especially men’s health — saves lives. And many doctors credit his openness with encouraging more men to schedule screenings they may otherwise avoid.
