My 8-year-old daughter sat silently through the will reading, waiting for her envelope just like the other grandchildren.

Daniel’s hand tightened around mine. I felt his whole body tremble, but he did not yell.

I did not yell either.

Mr. Coleman looked sharply at Patricia.

“Mrs. Whitaker, that is not what the will says.”

Patricia smiled faintly.

“It is the family’s position.” Weddingguest etiquette

Daniel’s voice was low.

“Because Emily is adopted?”

No one answered.

That silence said everything.
