Patrick tried to speak again.
« He misunderstood— »
« No, » Caleb interrupted. « You told me we couldn’t afford college and that I should stay home, get a job, and help support the family. You hid every opportunity I had. »
I looked at Patrick.
« Is that true? »
He couldn’t answer.
The silence answered for him.

Later, investigators confirmed that Patrick had redirected Caleb’s mail after convincing him it would « keep the family together. » Fortunately, the school district and the universities worked together to reinstate one of Caleb’s scholarship offers after learning what had happened.
That evening, I asked Patrick to leave our home.
