He could barely keep his eyes open.
I looked at him a long moment, wondering if I was making the biggest mistake of my life.
Then I stepped aside.
« Come in. You’ll catch your death out there. »
She hesitated, as if she hadn’t expected a yes.
« Thank you, » she whispered. « You have no idea what this means to me. »
I put the kettle on and made peanut butter sandwiches while she gave the boy a bath.
My hands remembered the motions from long ago.
« There’s a towel on the rack, » I called down the hall. « Clean ones in the cabinet. »
« I found them, » she called back. « Thank you, Mrs. Ellison. »
