The Day I Finally Saw My Mother

“Stop.”

I didn’t raise my voice.

I didn’t need to.

The word landed heavy in the room.

Verónica blinked. “What?”

“I said stop.”

Silence.

The rain outside hit the windows harder, like it wanted in.

I stepped closer, picking up my mother’s hand.

There was a fresh cut across her finger.
