The Dollar That Opened the Door

Calvin didn’t look at him.

“You said you wanted to help,” Walter continued. “But you weren’t helping. You were waiting.”

That hit harder than anything else in the room.

Calvin’s confidence flickered.

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table.

“You chose the wrong group of people,” I said. “Not because we’re smarter. Not because we’re tougher.”

I paused.

“But because we’re used to watching for patterns. And we don’t ignore them.”

Ellen slid a second folder across the table—this one thicker, heavier.

“Complaints,” she said. “Statements. Financial breakdowns. And a formal request for investigation already submitted.”
