The twins arrived later, subdued but not devastated, their concerns framed not around Julian’s condition but around stability, whether they would have to leave the mansion, whether their school would change, whether the life they knew would disappear, and while their anxiety was understandable for children raised in privilege, Julian felt the weight of his own complicity in teaching them to equate security with material continuity.

No one addressed their emotional confusion except María.

She arrived quietly, carrying a small bag of homemade food and personal items, and waited in the hallway without demanding access, praying softly in a way that was private rather than performative, and when she was finally allowed into Julian’s room, she took his hand and spoke to him as if he could hear her.

Her words were simple, unpolished, and devastating in their sincerity, telling him that he mattered beyond his money, that he was not alone, that the boys were confused but capable of learning, and that she would stay as long as it took.

She returned the next day.

While Isabella’s visits became shorter, less frequent, excused by exhaustion or obligations, María never missed a single one, bringing meals, checking details others overlooked, sitting with the twins when their mother disappeared into meetings with financial advisors and consultants who spoke of contingencies and exit strategies.

It was María who began teaching Theo and Noah how to draw pictures for Julian, how to ask about his pain rather than his property, how to understand that people are not valuable because of what they provide but because of who they are, and as Julian listened, unmoving, pretending to sleep, he realized something that shook him more than betrayal.

The people he believed were his family were already planning for his absence.

When he finally opened his eyes days later, the first face he saw was María’s, asleep in a chair beside him, his hand still in hers, and the sight broke something open inside him that he had sealed off for decades.
