The silence that followed was absolute.

Clare returned the salute, crisp and steady.
“Permission to stand down, sir,” she said quietly.
He nodded. “Granted.”
The commanding officer turned to the audience. “Lieutenant Commander Whitmore is currently serving under classified reassignment. Her record remains exemplary. The Navy thanks her for continued service.”
Then he handed her a sealed envelope — official, embossed, unmistakable.
Clare accepted it without ceremony.
Evelyn’s whisper had died before it reached her lips.
After the ceremony, the crowd dispersed slowly, their conversations hushed. Richard remained seated, staring at the floor. Evelyn hovered beside him, her composure cracked but not yet broken.
