“A Soaking Wet 7-Year-Old Knocked On My Door At Midnight And Said, ‘I Need A Dad By Friday — Or They’re Taking Me Away’”

I had walls up so high I’d forgotten what it felt like to let someone in.

Then a seven-year-old girl showed up barefoot on my porch at midnight — soaking wet, shaking, and holding two of my fingers like I was the only solid thing left in her world.

She looked up at me with those red-rimmed eyes and whispered four words that cracked me open like dry wood.

“I need a dad.”

And that was just the beginning.

PART 1: THE KNOCK
She was barefoot. It was midnight. And the first words out of her mouth destroyed every wall I’d spent three years building.

I almost didn’t answer the door.

It was a Tuesday in October. Rain coming down so hard it sounded like gravel against the windows. The kind of storm that makes you want to pull every curtain shut and pretend the outside world doesn’t exist. Which, honestly, was my default setting even on sunny days.
