The screen lit up with one word: Mom.
A cold feeling settled over me before I even answered. Somewhere behind me, a printer released its final page of the day. I should have ignored the call, but after thirty-one years of teaching myself to respond every time my mother reached for me, my thumb accepted before my mind could stop it.

She was already laughing before I could say hello.

“Are you sitting down?” she asked brightly. “Every dollar is gone. Hawaii isn’t cheap, sweetheart, and your sister finally got the vacation she deserved.”

My fingers tightened around the steel railing.

“What are you talking about?”

“Your American Express Gold card,” she said sweetly. “Ninety-nine thousand dollars. Flights, luxury resorts, shopping, dinners, all of it. We know your birthday. We know your Social Security number. We raised you.”

For one brief moment, it felt as if the floor had vanished beneath my feet. That card was not just a personal credit card. It kept my business running. It covered software subscriptions, travel expenses, operating costs, client deposits, and every payment my company depended on to survive.

With shaking hands, I opened the app and watched the charges appear one after another. First-class flights, luxury beachfront suites, an expensive SUV rental, designer stores in Waikiki, private dinners, spa treatments, and resort charges filled the screen until the total climbed close to one hundred thousand dollars.
