My daughter’s birthday was filled with laughter—until one message in the parents’ group chat revealed that most of the guests had never planned to stay. What I discovered that night had nothing to do with decorations, and everything to do with a grudge that should have ended years ago.

Including me.

Sophie couldn’t stop smiling.

Several times she hugged me for no reason.

« This is the best birthday ever, » she whispered.

Those words alone were worth every extra shift I’d worked.

Around four-thirty parents started arriving to collect their children.

Everyone thanked me politely.

Several mothers complimented the cake.

One father even asked for the frosting recipe.
