We moved some of Evelyn’s things into our home, and for the next year, I bathed her. I fed her soft eggs. I sat beside her through countless sleepless nights when she didn’t know where she was, and only my voice could settle her.

Michael always said the same thing: « I don’t know what we’d do without you. »

But there were small things I brushed off.

I bathed her.

My husband started taking phone calls in the garage, pacing under the yellow bulb long after I’d gone to bed.

Old file boxes appeared on the dining room table one weekend.

« Just tax stuff, » Michael said when I asked. « Mom’s paperwork, going back years. I want it organized before… you know. »

I nodded. I understood.
