She said my name!
Something strange happened.
« I’m here, » I whispered. « I’m right here. »
My MIL struggled, working her mouth around the words as if each one drained something from her.
« Don’t let Michael find it. »
I froze.
« Find what, Evelyn? What am I looking for? »
Her eyes wavered, and the fog rolled back in as quickly as it had lifted. She let go of my wrist and turned her face toward the window.
« I’m right here. »
