I Got Trapped in My Husband’s Office Elevator With a Woman I’d Never Met—By the Time the Doors Opened, My Marriage Was Already Over

« Oh. »

She laughed.

« Looks like we’re headed to the same place. »

« So it seems. »

The doors closed.

Ten seconds later…

The elevator lurched violently.

Everything went dark for a split second.

Then emergency lights came on.

The elevator stopped.

An alarm began ringing.

Neither of us spoke.

She pressed every button.

Nothing happened.

I hit the emergency phone.

Someone answered and assured us maintenance was already coming.

« About thirty minutes, » the voice said.

Thirty minutes.

Wonderful.

After several awkward minutes, we started talking.

She said she’d worked in the building for nearly two years.

I mentioned I was only delivering my husband’s forgotten lunch.

She smiled.

« That’s sweet. »

I shrugged.

« He’d probably skip eating otherwise. »

She nodded toward the lunchbox.

« So who’s your husband? »

I answered casually.

« Ethan Carter. »

Everything changed.

Her smile disappeared.

Her face went completely white.

She stared at me.

« No… »

she whispered.

« I must have heard wrong. »

I repeated his name.

She leaned against the wall.

« Oh… »

Her voice cracked.

« Oh, no. »

My stomach tightened.

« What? »

She looked sick.

« I… »

She covered her face.

« I don’t know what to do. »

My pulse began racing.

« Do you know my husband? »

She nodded very slowly.

« I thought… »

She swallowed hard.

« I thought he was divorced. »

Every sound inside the elevator seemed to disappear.

« What? »

She looked ready to cry.

« He told everyone his divorce had been finalized months ago. »

I couldn’t breathe.

« What are you talking about? »

She reached into her purse with shaking hands.

« I never would have… »

She unlocked her phone.

« I’m so sorry. »

She showed me a picture.

There he was.

Ethan.

Standing beside her.

His arm around her shoulders.

Both smiling.

Another picture.

Dinner together.

Another.

A beach.

Another.

Christmas lights.

The dates stretched back almost a year.

I stared at the screen.

« This… »

I whispered.

« …has to be fake. »

She shook her head.

« He said his ex-wife stayed home with the kids until the paperwork was finished. »

I felt dizzy.

« He said… »

She stopped herself.

« What? »

« He said he couldn’t introduce me to his daughter until the custody agreement was finalized. »

Tears filled my eyes.

« Our daughter lives with us. »

The woman burst into tears.

« Oh my God. »

« I didn’t know. »

« I swear I didn’t know. »

Neither of us spoke again until maintenance finally opened the doors.

Almost forty-five minutes had passed.

Outside stood Ethan.

The second he saw us together…

He froze.

His face lost all color.

He looked at me.

Then at her.

Then at the lunchbox still in my hands.

Nobody moved.

Finally I stepped forward.

« You forgot your lunch. »

I handed it to him.

He didn’t take it.

Instead he whispered,

« I can explain. »

The woman looked at him with complete disgust.

« You told me she was your ex-wife. »

He closed his eyes.

I quietly placed the lunchbox on the floor.

« No. »

I said calmly.

« You can explain it to your lawyer. »

Without another word, I turned around and walked away.

Behind me I heard him calling my name.

I never looked back.

Three months later, our divorce was finalized.

The woman sent me one final message.

« I hope one day you can forgive me. I truly didn’t know. »

I believed her.

After all…

She’d been trapped in that elevator just as surely as I had.

The only difference was that when the doors finally opened…

We both walked out of completely different lives.
