The Gate Knew My Name Before She Did

On my security monitor, Eleanor Drexler sat in the passenger seat wearing oversized sunglasses and a cream-colored blazer, already pointing toward the house as if she were giving instructions.

The fraud officer was still on the line.

« Miss Drexler? »

« Yes. »

« We’ve frozen the loan application pending investigation. »

I watched Eleanor’s car stop at the gate.

« Thank you, » I said quietly.

Then I ended the call.
