I turned into my driveway a few minutes after 7:10 that evening.
The garage door had barely begun rolling upward when flashing red and blue lights suddenly washed across the side of my house.
At first, I barely reacted.
I assumed the patrol vehicle was simply driving past.
Then I heard tires bite into the pavement.
A police SUV came to a hard stop directly behind my car.
Before I even had the chance to open my driver’s door all the way, Officer Grant Mercer was already shouting at the top of his lungs.
“Step out of the vehicle! Hands where I can see them!”
For a second, I simply froze.
Then I slowly lifted both hands into the air.
