The call came in the middle of the night, the kind of call that slices through sleep and leaves your heart racing before the words even land. I remember sitting upright in bed, phone pressed to my ear, listening to a stranger’s voice explain that my fourteen-year-old son had assaulted his father’s new wife at their wedding, that she’d been rushed to the hospital, that police were involved, that charges were being considered. For a long second, I couldn’t breathe. This was my son they were talking about. The boy who quit wrestling because he hated the idea of hurting anyone. The kid who cried when he accidentally stepped on a beetle because, in his words, “it didn’t deserve that.” And now I was being told he had beaten a grown woman unconscious in front of a room full of guests.

By the time the call ended, my hands were shaking so badly I had to sit on them. An emergency flight later, running on adrenaline and terror, I was standing in the driveway of my ex-husband’s house. The wedding decorations were still half up, limp ribbons clinging to the porch railings, as if the celebration had simply frozen mid-breath. Dark stains marred the concrete near the front steps, unmistakable and horrifying. I rang the doorbell, my chest tight, already bracing myself for whatever version of my son I was about to see.
