I opened my mouth to say we couldn’t afford a real beach vacation right now, but then I looked at her face. Sun-flushed. Hopeful. Trying so hard to ask as though it weren’t a big deal.
« Let me see what I can figure out, honey. »

« Really. Grandma’s gonna work something out. »

Dolly threw her damp little arms around my waist and ran back to the sprinkler before I could take it back.
