She smiled a little. « It’s so HOT. I really wish we could go swimming somewhere. Not the sprinkler. A real pool. »

I hadn’t even heard the screen door.

I opened my mouth to say we couldn’t afford a real beach vacation right now, but then I looked at her face. Sun-flushed. Hopeful. Trying so hard to ask as though it weren’t a big deal.

« Let me see what I can figure out, honey. »

« Really?! »

« Really. Grandma’s gonna work something out. »

« Let me see what I can figure out. »

Dolly threw her damp little arms around my waist and ran back to the sprinkler before I could take it back.

I stood there in the kitchen, counting quarters in my head, already knowing I’d find a way.
