I felt my stomach drop. « Everything about what? »
« Did Zane ever tell you he had a daughter before he met you? »
She stepped back. « You need to come inside. »
Her name was Mara.
We sat across from each other in a quiet living room, the opened envelope between us. I still thought I was bracing for one kind of betrayal.
Mara looked at me for a long moment, then asked, « Did Zane ever tell you he had a daughter before he met you? »
I stared at her.
I looked down at the papers in the envelope. On top was a letter in Zane’s handwriting.
« What? »
Her voice broke. « I’m his daughter. »
