My grandfather’s hands were still on my wheelchair when the biker pointed at me and said, « You told me my daughter was dead. »

The flea market went silent.

A customer lowered the quilt she’d been holding. Someone at the next table stopped folding cardboard boxes. Tessa, my best friend before the crash, stood behind me with both hands pressed to her mouth.

I looked up at Grandpa.

« You told me my daughter was dead. »

He’d raised me since birth. He’d packed my lunches, attended every school event, and taught himself different ways to style my hair.

Now his fingers were locked around my chair.

« His daughter? » I asked.
