“Mom… he was in your tummy with me,” the boy said, pointing at the street child.

For a second, she felt as if time bent
and returned her to a white room,
with lights on the ceiling
and voices that faded away,
as if they were speaking underwater.

An incomplete memory.
A strange feeling
that had always been pushed to the bottom.

She had spent years convincing herself
that it was just nerves from childbirth,
that her mind was making things up.

But now…

Now there were two children
looking at each other as if they had met
after a lifetime.

“Matthew, don’t talk nonsense,” he muttered,
trying to sound firm.

He didn’t succeed.

Her voice cracked.
“Let’s go.”

“No, Mom. I know him.”

Mateo let go of Daniela’s hand
and ran.
