The babies cried louder, as if agreeing.
Daniel’s jaw tightened. He tried to push himself up and failed, his body giving out under him.
“Locker,” he forced out. “Inside jacket. Phone. Don’t turn it on. Just—listen.”
Anna hesitated.
Everything about this felt wrong. The alley. The gun. The way he talked like systems were hunting him instead of helping him.
