Two Police Officers Thought I Was Just Another Black Woman They Could Push Around in an Austin Parking Lot.

“Funny thing about that question,” he said. “People who ask it usually have something to hide.”

A woman returning her shopping cart slowed down and stopped to watch.

Near the entrance, a man reached for his phone and began recording.

Anderson stepped closer.

“We received a complaint.”

“What kind of complaint?”

“Loitering.”

I stared at him.

“Loitering?”

“Said there was a suspicious female matching your description.”
