I already knew what she meant.
Before I could answer, she asked quietly,
“Do you think Dad would recognize me now?”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
A moment later she forced a smile.
“Sorry. Bad topic.”
“No,” I said gently. “It’s okay.”
She stared at her reflection.
“I just wonder sometimes if he thinks about me on important days.”
I repeated the line I had been telling her for years.
