A 3,400-pound rejected bull smashed through steel in Texas, and everyone signed his death papers. Breeders called him too vicious, handlers were nearly killed, and one careless shipping mistake sent him toward an Alaska ranch with no real fences.

“Delivery.”

Silas looked at the trailer. “Delivery of what?”

“One Charolais bull. Four years old. From Texas.”

Silas stared at him. “I didn’t order a bull.”

The driver glanced at the paperwork. “Crow’s Edge Ranch, Talkeetna, Alaska. Facility code AK9072487. That you?”

“That’s my place, but I didn’t order any bull.”

“Then take it up with the shipper.”

Silas removed his gloves slowly. “How big is this animal?”

“Thirty-four hundred pounds.”

The cold seemed to move straight through his coat. “You’re joking.”
