In September 1936, photographers Captain Hubert Provand and Indre Shira were inside Raynham Hall working on a magazine assignment.

Their task seemed simple enough: photograph the historic interior of the mansion.

As they prepared equipment near the grand staircase, something extraordinary happened.

One of the men suddenly noticed what appeared to be a pale figure descending the stairs.

At first he thought it was a trick of the light.

Then he realized the shape was moving.

The photographer immediately raised his camera.

Seconds later, he snapped a single photograph.
