THE DAY THE SHERIFF STOPPED BEING PATIENT

Sophie didn’t meet his eyes, but her breathing started to slow.

“Can you squeeze Daddy’s hand?”

A pause.

Then—tiny fingers tightening around his.

Good.

That meant she was coming back.

That meant she was still with him.

He wrapped her tighter in the blanket and stood.

“Let’s go see Nana,” he said softly.

His mother lived next door—close enough for moments like this.
