Then Nathan turned impatiently toward the elderly notary sitting quietly in the corner.
“Wake up, old man. Get your stamp ready. My lawyers are paying your firm a thousand dollars an hour, so let’s stop wasting time.”
The old man did not respond.
He simply continued reading the papers resting on his lap.
I never touched the credit card. I did not argue. I did not defend myself. I did not ask Nathan to reconsider. I only remained seated, watching him with the same calm expression I had worn from the moment I entered the conference room.
Nathan mistook my silence for defeat.
In truth, it was the first sign that he had completely misunderstood the room he thought he controlled.
The elderly notary had quietly listened to every insult, every lie, and every arrogant sentence Nathan had proudly placed into the official record. In only a few more minutes, he would finally remove his glasses, rise from his chair, and reveal a truth neither Nathan nor Madison could have imagined.
The woman they thought they were throwing away…
…had never been the powerless one at the table.
