By the fifth call, I answered.

I didn’t say hello.

I simply waited.

« Mom! »

The panic in his voice was immediate.

Gone was the confident man who had laughed in my driveway.

Gone was the smug smile.

Gone was the certainty.

« Mom, thank God. Listen, there’s been some kind of mistake. »
