Michael picked up the first page and put it down like it had burned him.
“Dad,” he said, “what did you do?”
Dad looked at his hands.
“It started as a business guarantee,” he said. “Then a refinance. Then another paper they said was temporary.”
Daniel leaned forward. “Who told you that?”
Dad did not answer.
That silence said enough.
Michael stepped back.
“I can’t do this,” he said.
