According to legend, Ichabod remembered hearing that the Horseman could not cross a certain bridge near the old church.

Desperately, he urged his horse onward.
The bridge appeared ahead.
He crossed.
And turned to look.
For a moment, it seemed he had escaped.
Then the Headless Horseman stood in his stirrups and hurled his severed head directly at him.
The object struck Ichabod.
And he vanished forever.
What Happened to Ichabod Crane?
The following morning, townspeople found only scattered traces of the encounter.
His hat.
His horse.
And a shattered pumpkin lying near the bridge.
Ichabod Crane was gone.
No body was ever discovered.
No explanation was ever confirmed.
Some believed the Headless Horseman carried him away into the darkness.
Others suspected a more earthly explanation involving Brom Bones and an elaborate prank.
But nobody could prove either theory.
And that uncertainty is exactly what keeps the story alive.
