I Took Dinner to My Police Officer Husband’s Station on Our Anniversary – Then a Radio Announcement Made My Blood Run Cold

He had been checking that phone all week.

I had noticed that, but every time I asked if work was keeping him busy, he simply smiled and said it was nothing important.

« Rach, » he said quietly, frowning at the screen. « Captain wants me in tonight. Some old paperwork review. They moved me to nights. »

« Tonight? » »I’m sorry. He called this morning. Said it couldn’t wait. »

I tried to smile.

« It’s okay. We’ll celebrate tomorrow. »

« I’ll make it up to you. » He crossed the kitchen and wrapped his arms around me. « Lasagna on Saturday. Candles. The whole disaster. »

« You don’t even like candles. »

« I’ll learn. »

He laughed, but something about it sounded forced.When he pulled away, he rested his chin on top of my head for a moment longer than usual.
