I didn’t push.

“Have you thought about going?” I asked one night while we were doing dishes.

She kept her eyes on the sink. “No.”

“No because you don’t want to, or no because you think we can’t afford it?”

She dried one plate, set it down, then shrugged. “Both.”

She hesitated, then turned the laptop toward me.
