Against every instinct, I shut the door.

The room fell silent.

Naomi looked at our daughter, then back at me.

“My grandmother was white.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So?”

“You never met my mother’s side of the family.”

I frowned.

“My grandfather was Black. My grandmother was Scandinavian. My mother inherited darker skin, but she carried genes that never disappeared.”
