I picked up a used washing machine from a thrift store

The elderly woman.

The one from the day before.

She was standing near the front of the driveway, holding onto a younger man’s arm—her son, I assumed.

Her eyes met mine.

And she smiled.

Soft.

Warm.

Relieved.

I stepped forward, confused.

“Ma’am…? Is everything okay?”
