Cole’s jaw tightened.
“Is my daughter hurt?”
“No, sir.”
“Did she hurt someone?”
“No.”
“Then tell me why my fourteen-year-old is being kept in an office before first period.”
Another pause. Longer this time.
“There are allegations regarding academic dishonesty connected to the county math invitational.”
For one strange second the words did not mean anything. Academic dishonesty. County math invitational. They drifted in the air like loose screws on a workbench, separate pieces waiting to be fitted together. Then they clicked into place, and he felt the hot, hard edge of anger move through him so fast he had to put a hand on the bench to steady it.
