“I’m afraid there’s been a restructuring decision,” she said smoothly, folding her hands together with a composure that suggested the outcome had been determined long before Maggie entered the room. “Your position has been eliminated.”
For a moment Maggie simply blinked.
“I’m sorry,” she said quietly, assuming she had misunderstood. “I’ve worked here twenty-four years.”
“Yes,” Cynthia replied with a polite smile that never reached her eyes. “And we appreciate your service.”
The phrase sounded rehearsed.
“Then I don’t understand,” Maggie continued. “My evaluations have always been excellent.”
Cynthia glanced down at the folder.
“There was a complaint from a family,” she said.
“About what?”
“That information is confidential.”
Maggie leaned forward slowly, a feeling of cold disbelief spreading through her chest.
“So someone accused me of something, and I’m not allowed to know what it was?”
