She was twelve years old.

Thin.

Angry.

Protective of her mother in a way no child should have to be.

Rain tapped against the windows of Laura’s small townhouse while I stood awkwardly in the kitchen holding a grocery bag full of pasta and garlic bread like some nervous teenager trying to impress a family that clearly did not want him there.
