After the second set of twins was born, the family attracted international media attention because experts considered the situation exceptionally rare.
The family was later recognized by the Guinness World Records for having two sets of biracial twins with clearly different appearances.
Reports at the time estimated that:
Biracial twins with noticeably different appearances may occur in roughly 1 in 500,000 births
Two sets happening in the same family could be closer to 1 in 1,000,000
Although the exact odds are difficult to calculate perfectly, experts agree the situation is extremely uncommon.
Why Do the Twins Look So Different?
The explanation comes down to genetics.
The twins are understood to be fraternal twins, not identical twins. Fraternal twins happen when two separate eggs are fertilized by two different sperm cells during the same pregnancy.
Because each baby receives a unique mix of genes, fraternal twins can sometimes look very different from one another.
