Everyone called me crazy for marrying a 60-year-old woman,” but on our wedding night, I saw a mark on her shoulder, heard her say, “I have to tell you the truth,” and realized my entire life had been a lie.

My breath hitched. I took a staggering step backward, my hand trembling as I pointed at her pale skin. My brain violently rejected the visual information, short-circuiting as I tried to process the impossible.

“That mark…” I choked out, my voice sounding like it belonged to a frightened stranger. “Why… why do you have the exact same mark as me?”

Eleanor tightly squeezed her eyes shut. A single tear escaped, cutting a track through her immaculate makeup. She took a small step back, wrapping her arms around her own ribs as if physically bracing herself for a fatal impact.

At first, I felt a fog of pure confusion. Then, a hot, rising spike of anger at the timing of this confession. But rapidly, both were swallowed by a deep, primal fear that clamped around my chest like a vice, making it impossible to draw a full breath.

“What does that have to do with me?” I asked sharply. I was practically barking the words, desperately trying to maintain some illusion of control over a situation that was spiraling into madness.

She lifted her chin, her tear-filled eyes locking directly onto mine without a shred of hesitation.
