It was the kind of silence that stretches just long enough for the heart to start racing.
“Mr. Salvatierra…” the doctor finally said. “You need to come to the hospital immediately.”
Ricardo felt a cold weight drop into his stomach.
“Is it María?”
Another pause.
“She collapsed at home.”
The words echoed inside Ricardo’s head as if they had been spoken inside a tunnel.
“What do you mean collapsed?” he demanded. “Is she conscious?”
