I used the rental income to travel across countries I had always dreamed of seeing — cities and coastlines and quiet mornings in places I had postponed for years while I was busy raising someone else’s daughter as my own. For the first time in twenty-two years, I was living for myself.
My heart still aches. I will not pretend otherwise. You do not spend twenty-two years loving a child and simply switch that off. But I have chosen dignity over endless sacrifice. I have chosen to protect what little I had left of myself after giving so much away.
Loyalty must go both ways. Love without respect is not love — it is convenience. And when Sofía chose to see me as helpful rather than irreplaceable, she also lost the privileges that came with my unconditional devotion.
